Sonja’s Personal & Professional Creed

The Nature of God

God of Perfect Compassion. Rescuer from suffering and brokenness; from sin and condemnation. You offer hope…change…love…despite all. You are always there… on our side.

“…Compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in loving-kindness and truth…”

Exodus 34:6

Who else would lovingly sacrifice a Son – for ME? You are father, friend, forgiver, peace giver. El Shaddai – “God All-Powerful and All-Sufficient”, Jehovah Jireh – “The Lord Who Sees and Who Provides”, Jehovah Rophi – “The Lord Who Heals”, Jehovah Makkeh – “The Lord Who Smiles”, Jehovah Nissi – “The Lord Our Banner” , Jehovah Shalom – “The Lord Our Peace”, Jehovah Tsidkenu – “The Lord Our Righteousness”, Jehovah Shammah – “The Lord is There”, Jehovah Rohi – “The Lord Our Shepherd”, Immanuel – “God With Us”, Jehovah Tsebaioth – “The Lord of Hosts”. As with your people Israel, you choose to pursue me for the sake of my well-being. What love in pursuit! I am amazed…no one compares to you.

The Nature of Human-kind

There is so much pain in the souls that pass. So void of attachment to anyone with your healing nature. Alone…suffering…despairing.  How can they see You with eyes scarred by powerlessness, fear, lack, abandonment, loneliness? How can they see You through souls that are broken, lost, directionless,  alone, weary with fighting and feeling overcome, discouraged, unloved, un-championed, debilitated by guilt …there is so much….  Running away from anything that offers promise of healing, for fear of inevitable disappointment. In our brokenness our thoughts and desires rage against your ways, against your love, against you.

The Role of Faith in the Psychological Healing Process

I know your plan for me is right. You have created me as a vessel that shows your healing power. I surrender to you. Your presence in the counseling room offers healing beyond my knowledge or skill. So I surrender.

Even as I strive to perfect my craft, I strive to know you Lord. I want to know you more. You are my vital need. You are the vital need of the souls you have me to serve. Thank you that you honor purity of heart, and that in my imperfection you see their need, and you fill the gaps, covering my insufficiency with your grace, and thus your greatness is glorified. You are all they need. So I surrender. You have been so faithful. I stand amazed that you love me, that you use me. So I surrender.

The Role of the Christian Counselor in Soul-Healing

How can they see you? Can they find You through me? Allow me to see Your lambs through Your eyes and not my imperfect ones, scarred with my own hurt and pain. I offer myself as a steadfast vessel, ever advocating for them in session and in prayer, standing in intercession over their bodies, bowed with pain, offering respite from the spiritual forces that besiege them, offering space so they can find your

Unconditional love, safety, guidance, mercy, grace, companionship, strength, warrior kingship, champion love, protection, deliverance, power, boldness.

until they find in you the strength to stand on their own, in You.

O Lord my God, in You I put my trust; Save me from all those who persecute me; And deliver me, Lest they tear me like a lion, Rending me in pieces, while there is none to deliver.

Psalm 7:1-2

I pray that through therapy I will offer a safe place where they can explore and be at their worst. And that in my inward and outward lives, I will choose to “BE”…YOURS…and in doing so, draw them to You, showing them the key to their shackles, and so that their eyes can see what they could experience in you.

The Doctoral Mandate:

How Will I Make A Difference?

Called to Servant-Leadership

Who do I want to be? Where do I want to go? How do I want to be remembered? What difference will I make? Most, if not all of us, want to know that we have left a positive mark on the world…to know that we have made a difference…that someone’s life was made better because we were here…that our lives were not in vain.

The call on my life has always been towards Servant-Leadership. I believe that every individual has within them the ability to change the world around them. The foundational call on every individual’s life is to find their unique, God-inspired strengths and to walk with them into places they have never been before, in order to influence their world. If I can position myself to partner and walk with others on their journey –

to encourage, to inspire, to nurture,

so they can find their way towards positively influencing their world, then someone who sees their brightened light will also be inspired. What a wonderful gift to give, and be given. Yet what a humbling responsibility.

Even though I have ideas, I don’t know exactly where God will place me.

Counselor-Educator…Systems of Care Development and Implementation…Program Administrator…Researcher…

I‘ve decided that I don’t exactly have to know right now, so I release that. But I pray that I will always be…

a Servant-Leader.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing…If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
